Chlorine Removal

Technical Profile

Residual chlorine is a strong oxidizing agent and will damage RO membranes at concentrations of as little as 1 mg/l of continuous exposure.

Prior to sulfate removal or reverse osmosis, chlorine must be removed. Chlorine and chloramines can be effectively removed with chemical scavengers such as sodium bisulfite (SBS) or sodium metabisulfite (SMBS). Both form an aqueous solution of SBS, which removes free chlorine from hypochlorite addition as follows:

NaHSO3 + HOCl → HCl + NaHSO4
