Secondary Solids Separation

Technical Profile

The objective of this process is removal of particles from water that might clog or foul deaeration or membrane equipment used to prepare seawater for injection. Secondary Solids Separation removes particles finer than coarse filters used after the seawater intake but coarser than fine particle removal provided by cartridge or membrane filtration. Multimedia filtration is common technology for this process, but micro filtration (MF) and ultra filtration (UF) membranes have promise. Secondary solids separation is typically placed between cooling water exchange and deaeration or fine solids removal.

Multimedia filters remove colloidal and larger particles from water by passage through a porous filter media consisting of sand and granular coal. Suspended solids from less than 1 micron to 50 microns and larger may be removed. For downstream membrane processes such as sulfate removal or reverse osmosis, silt density index (SDI) should be reduced to 3 or less.

Contaminants are captured on the filtration media in downflow operation. Particles are removed from the filter media using backwash and in some instances gas scouring. Filters generally utilize separate layers of anthracite, sand and fine garnet to progressively clean water. Media size distribution is as follows:
